우리 인간은 기억을 먹고 산다는 생각을 가끔 합니다. 좋은 추억은 우리가 살아가는데 힘이 되고, 나쁜 기억은 우리 삶을 옭아매는 족쇄 역할을 하는 것을 종종 보고 경험하게 되죠.

제게 있는 교회의 첫 기억은 동네 교회 주일학교 선생님의 모습입니다. 동네 교회 주일학교를 다닌 적이 있었는데 집사님 정도 되어 보이는 중년의 남자 선생님이 땀을 뻘뻘 흘리며 올망졸망 모인 대여섯명의 남자 아이들을 가르치던 모습입니다. 그때 무슨 말을 하셨는지는 하나도 기억나지 않지만, ‘저 분은 도대체 왜 저런 열심으로 가르치시나?’ 라는 궁금증이 마음에 새겨졌던 기억이 있습니다.

그리고 중학교 1학년때 친구의 꾀임으로 (자기 교회에 예쁜 여자 아이들이 많다고 해서 갔는데 전혀 그렇지 않았음) 노량진교회 중등부 예배를 참석했었는데, 그 날 예배 광고 시간에 총무라는 형이 광고를 하는 모습이 잊히지 않았습니다. 무슨 내용인지는 기억이 나지 않지만 애타고 간절한 모습으로 교회 행사를 알리는 모습을 보면서, ‘저 형은 도대체 교회 일이 뭐길래 저렇게 열심으로 광고를 하나?’ 하는 의구심에 그 다음 주일에도, 그리고 그 다음 주일에도 교회를 찾았던 기억이 있습니다.

그렇게 시작한 “신앙” 여정에 참 많고 좋은 추억이 쌓이게 되었네요. 특별히 청소년때 이민 와서 기댈 곳 하나 없는 망망한 이민 생활에서 교회 중고등부는, 그리고 고등학교 시절 내내 참여했던 “기독학생회”라는 성경공부 모임은 저에겐 마르지 않은 옹달샘과 같은 소중한 기억들을 잔뜩 안겨주었습니다. 그렇게 인생의 광야길에서 텁텁해지는 마음을 그 추억들로 적셔가며, 그리고 목사로서의 마음이 흩트려지려 할 때 마다 그 주일학교 선생님과 그 중등부 선배의 벌건 얼굴을 기억하며 여기까지, 나름 신실하게, 나름 힘차게 오게 되었습니다.

저는 교회가 자녀들에게 이렇게 잊을 수 없는 하나님 은혜의 기억들을 심어주는 것이 가장 중요한 일의 하나라고 생각합니다. 그런 기억들은 우리 자녀들이 인생의 힘들고 어려운 일을 만날 때마다 그들을 지켜주며, 또한 그들을 더욱 깊은 하나님의 은혜의 자리로 인도하는 믿음의 끈이 되어 줄 것입니다.

그렇기에 힘에 넘치게 어린이 주일 축제를 준비하고, 힘에 부치더라도 여름성경학교 데코레이션을 크게 하고, 힘을 다해 중고등부 행사를 후원해 주고 있습니다. 이런 노력을 통해서 우리 자녀들의 마음 가운데 교회가 우리를 엄청 사랑해 주는구나 하는 한 줄 기억이 새겨지고, 그 기억 끝자락에 왜 이렇게 우릴 사랑하지 하는 질문의 답으로 예수 그리스도의 생명의 빛이 비쳐진다면 교회로서 칭찬받을만한 일 한가지를 잘 감당한 것은 아닐까 생각합니다.

어린이 주일입니다. 만나는 아이들마다 머리에 손을 얹고 기도해 주는 마음으로 “Hi!” 라고 인사해 주시고, “God Bless You!” 하며 안아도 주시고, “You Look Cool!” 하며 하이파이브도 해 주시면 좋겠습니다. 아이들이 좋아하는 햄버거, 핫도그도 맛있게 먹어 주시고, 오늘 중고등부가 갖는 Bake Sale에도 넘치게 후원해 주시면 감사하겠습니다. 오늘은 어린이 주일입니다! 아이들의 웃음 소리와, 그들을 향한 사랑이 가득한 교회가 되기를 ... 그리고 그 위에 하나님의 따듯한 미소가 가득한 하루가 되기를 축복합니다! 아멘!

I believe that we human beings live on memories. Good memories become a source of strength as we journey through life, while painful memories, chains that bind us from moving forward.

My earliest memory of church is of a Sunday school teacher in a small neighborhood church. I attended that church for a time, and I remember a middle-aged man—perhaps a deacon—teaching a group of five or six young boys, sweating profusely as he poured his heart into it. I don’t remember a single word he said, but I clearly remember the question that stayed with me: “Why is he teaching with such passion?”

Later, when I was in the first year of middle school, I went to a church in Noryangjin because a friend told me there were many pretty girls there (which turned out not to be true at all). What I do remember, however, is the announcements during the youth service. A young student leader was making announcements with such earnestness and urgency. I don’t remember what he said, but I remember wondering, “What is it about church that makes him so passionate?” That curiosity led me to return the next Sunday—and the Sundays after that.

That is how my journey of faith began, and along the way, so many wonderful memories have been built. Especially after immigrating as a teenager, when everything felt unfamiliar and I had nowhere to lean, the church youth group, and the Bible study fellowship I participated in throughout high school, became like an ever-flowing spring that filled my life with meaningful and life-giving memories. In the wilderness of life, when my heart felt dry, those memories refreshed me. Even now, whenever my pastoral heart begins to waver, I recall the flushed face of that Sunday school teacher and the passionate youth leader—and those memories have carried me this far, helping me walk faithfully and with strength.

I believe one of the most important roles of the church is to plant these unforgettable memories of God’s grace in the hearts of our children. These memories will guard them when they face hardships in life and will become a thread of faith that draws them deeper into God’s grace.

That is why we put much effort in preparing for Children’s Sunday. That is why we go all out to decorate for Vacation Bible School. That is why we extravagantly support our youth events. Through these efforts, if one simple memory is planted in our children’s hearts—“The church really loves us”—and if, at the end of that memory, they begin to wonder, “Why do they love us so much?” and find the answer in the life-giving light of Jesus Christ, then perhaps we, as a church, have done something truly worthy of praise.

Today is Children’s Sunday. As you meet each child, I invite you to greet them with a heartfelt “Hi!” as if placing your hand on their head in prayer. Give them a warm hug and say, “God bless you!” Offer a cheerful high-five and say, “You look cool!” Enjoy the hamburgers and hot dogs with them. And I would also appreciate it very much if you can generously support the youth group’s bake sale today. Today is Children’s Sunday! May our church be filled with the joyful laughter of children and with love poured out upon them. And above all, may it be a day filled with the warm smile of God upon all of us! Amen!
