지난 12월, ‘영철버거’로 잘 알려진 이영철 씨의 별세 소식이 전해지며 인터넷 공간은 애도의 글로 가득 찼었습니다. 이영철 씨는 어린 시절 아버지를 여의고, 가난한 가정 형편 속에서 초등학교 4학년을 겨우 마친 뒤, 공장, 중국집 배달원 등으로 일하며 어려운 삶을 살아왔습니다. 그러던 어느 날 공사 현장에서 허리를 다쳐 더 이상 일을 할 수 없는 상황에 이르게 되는데, 그때 그는 ‘마지막’이라는 생각으로, 전 재산이었던 2만 2천 원을 털어 고려대 앞에서 작은 햄버거 노점상을 시작하게 됩니다.

나이 어린 대학생들에게 허리를 굽혀 햄버거를 판다는 일이 결코 쉽지는 않았을 것입니다. 그러나 돼지고기 뒷다리 살에 양파, 청양고추, 양배추 등 좋은 재료를 아낌없이 넣어 만든 푸짐한 수제버거, 그리고 무려 10년 동안 변하지 않았던 1,000원의 가격과 무한 리필 콜라는 주머니가 가벼운 대학생들에게 큰 사랑을 받기에 부족함이 없었을 뿐더러, 가게를 찾는 학생들을 손님이 아닌 동생처럼 여기며 진심으로 대한 그의 마음이 전해지면서 영철버거는 안암동 고려대 앞의 명물이 되게 됩니다.

그렇게 영철버거는 단순히 “싸고 든든한 한 끼”가 아니라, 고대생들에게는 추억 그 자체가 되었습니다. 시험 공부하던 허기진 밤을 버티게 해 주던 곳이었고, 선후배가 자연스럽게 어울리던 캠퍼스의 사랑방이었으며, 청춘의 배고픔과 정을 함께 채워 주던 공간이었습니다. 한때 영업난으로 문을 닫게 되었을 때, 무려 2,600명의 고려대생들이 자발적으로 7천만 원을 모아 가게를 다시 열게 했다는 이야기는 이곳이 어떤 의미였는지를 잘 보여줍니다.

음식이란 참으로 묘한 힘이 있는 것 같습니다. 함께 밥을 나눈다는 것은 단순히 허기를 채우는 일이 아니라, 그 안에 사랑과 기억, 그리고 관계가 담기는 소중한 행위이기 때문이겠죠? 그렇기에 예수님의 사역에 먹는 이야기가 많이 나오고, 또한 교회에서 매주일 함께 식사하는 일도 중요한 사역이 되는 것 같습니다.

그런데 이러한 주일 점심 친교를 잠시 멈추게 됩니다. 작년부터 진행해 온 친교실 공사의 마지막 단계인 바닥 타일 공사가 약 3주간 진행되기 때문입니다. 이번 공사를 통해 오랜 숙원이었던 부엌 바닥 타일도 함께 교체하게 되어 감사하긴 한데, 앞으로 두 주일 점심 친교가 어려워지게 된 것이 많이 아쉽습니다. 공사가 잘 마무리되어 사순절이 시작되는 2월 중순부터는 다시 점심 친교를 재개할 수 있도록 기도해 주시면 감사하겠습니다. (이 기간 동안 SEED 어린이 채플과 Imago Dei 중고등부 채플 예배는 계속 진행됩니다.)

주일 점심 친교는 교우 여러분의 사랑이 담긴 귀한 헌금과 여러 속의 수고로 매주 준비되고 있습니다. 곰곰이 생각해 보면, 매주 온 교회가 한자리에 모여 함께 식사할 수 있다는 것은 결코 당연한 일이 아니라 기적과도 같은 은혜입니다. 이 자리를 빌려, 이러한 사랑의 식탁을 가능하게 해 주시는 모든 분들께 진심으로 감사의 마음을 전하며, 아울러 한 가지 부탁의 말씀을 드립니다. 아직 올해 친교표에 빈자리가 많이 남아 있는데, 아직 사인업을 하지 못하신 분들께서는 사랑의 마음으로 남은 자리를 채워 주시면 감사하겠습니다.
 
올해도 한미의 모든 식탁이 사랑과 은혜로 가득하길 축복하며, 다시 한번 감사를 드립니다!

Last December, news of the passing of Mr. Youngcheol Lee—widely known through “Youngcheol Burger”—spread, and the internet quickly filled with messages of condolence. Mr. Lee lost his father at a young age and grew up in poverty, barely completing the fourth grade. He lived a difficult life, working in factories and as a delivery man for Chinese restaurants. One day, however, he injured his back at a construction site and found himself unable to continue working. Believing he had reached his “last” option, he used his entire savings—22,000 won—to start a small hamburger street stand in front of Korea University.

Bending his back to sell hamburgers to much younger college students could not have been easy. Yet his hearty, handmade burgers—generously made with pork hind leg meat, onions, jalapeño peppers, cabbage, and other quality ingredients—along with a price that remained just 1,000 won for a full ten years and unlimited refills of soda, were more than enough to win the hearts of students with light wallets. Even more than the food, it was his sincere heart—treating students not as customers but as younger siblings—that left a lasting impression. In this way, Youngcheol Burger became a beloved landmark in Anam-dong, right in front of Korea University.

For Korea University students, it became more than a place to eat—it became memory itself. It was the place that helped them endure hungry nights of studying for exams, a campus living room where seniors and juniors naturally gathered, and a space that filled both the stomach and the heart of youth. The story that, when the shop once had to close due to financial difficulties, as many as 2,600 students voluntarily raised 70 million won to reopen it clearly shows what this place meant to them.

Food has a mysterious power. Sharing a meal is not simply about filling an empty stomach; it is an act that carries love, memories, and relationships within it. Perhaps that is why so many stories of eating appear throughout Jesus’ ministry, and why sharing a meal together every Sunday is also an important ministry of the church.

For this reason, it is with regret that we inform you of the suspension of our Sunday lunch fellowship for the next two Sundays. The final stage of the fellowship hall renovation, which began last year, will take approximately three weeks to complete. We are thankful that the long-awaited project of replacing the kitchen floor tiles will also get done this time, but it is unfortunate that Sunday lunch fellowship has to be suspended. We would appreciate your prayers that we may resume lunch fellowship in mid-February, before the season of Lent begins. (During this period, SEED Children’s Chapel and Imago Dei Youth chapel services will continue as usual.)

Sunday lunch fellowship is prepared each week through the love offerings of our congregation and the faithful service of many small groups. When we pause to reflect, the fact that our entire church can gather in one place and share a meal every week is not something to be taken for granted—it is a grace that feels nothing short of a miracle. Taking this opportunity, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who makes this table of love possible, and I would also like to make one humble request. There are still many open spots on this year’s fellowship sign-up sheet, so if you have not yet signed up, we would greatly appreciate it if you would fill one of the remaining spots with a loving heart.

May all the tables of Hanmi be filled once again with love and grace throughout this year. Thank you!
