오는 화요일이 구정 설날입니다. 그리고 그 다음날인 18일이 사순절 첫날인 재의 수요일이네요. 한 해를 시작하는 날과 사순절 첫날이 겹쳐지는 것도 은혜가 아닌가 하는 생각이 듭니다. 새해를 시작한다는 다짐과 결심으로 사순절을 시작할 수 있음이 감사합니다.
재의 수요일 예배는 18일 저녁 7시에 교회에서 있습니다. 재를 이마에 바르는 재의 예식이 있겠는데. 수요일 새벽 예배 시간에도 이 예식을 갖도록 하겠습니다. 재의 수요일 새벽부터 “천로역정”을 함께 읽어가게 됩니다. 40일 새벽기도 시간에 기도와 책을 읽는 순서를 맡아 주실 여러분께 감사를 드립니다. 아울러 책을 원하시는 분들은 속장님을 통해서 책을 받아가 주시기 바랍니다. 책값은 5불입니다. 이 역시 속장님께 내 주시면 감사하겠습니다.
오늘부터 매 주일 주보와 함께 “4천번제 캠페인 카드”를 나눠 드립니다. 오늘 나눌 말씀과 같이 신앙생활에서는 비우는 일과 함께 채우는 일이 중요한 것 같습니다. 이번 사순절에는 금식등을 통해서 삶의 덜 필요한 것들을 비움과 함께 삶에 도움이 되고 하나님께서 기뻐하실 만한 선한 일들로 채워가는 일을 함께 해 보았으면 합니다. 카드에 나와 있는 것과 같이 “삶의 금식” “마음과 생각” “말과 행동” “성전인 몸”등 네가지 영역에서 각각 한가지씩 실천 사항을 정하시고 일주일간 실천해 감으로 우리 삶과 신앙의 모습을 조금씩 다듬어 갈 수 있기를 바랍니다. 그렇게 실천하신 내용을 역시 카드에 표시하셔서 다음 주일에 속장님께 내 주시고 주보와 함께 나눠 드릴 새 카드를 받아 가시면 되겠습니다.
다음 주일부터 6주간 사순절 주일 성경공부가 시작됩니다. 이번 사순절 기간에는 주일 오후에 “예수님의 비유”를 함께 살펴보는 성경공부 시간을 갖기로 했습니다. 친교후 1시에 시작되는 성경공부를 통해 또한 은혜 받는 사순절이 되기를 바라며, 평소에 성경공부에 참여하지 못하셨던 분들이 함께 참여하실 수 있으면 좋겠습니다.
별 문제없이 진행될 줄 알았던 친교실 공사가 또 지연되게 되었습니다. 부엌과 스토리지룸, 그리고 계단 랜딩부분은 공사가 다 끝났는데 친교실에 필요할 타일 숫자를 공급 회사가 잘못 계산해서 타일이 모자라게 되었습니다. 뒤늦게 이를 파악하고 필요한 타일을 더 주문했는데 필요한 물품이 오기까지는 2주가 걸린다고 합니다. 지금 친교실 반쯤 깔린 타일들은 아직 그 위에 실런트를 입히지 못한 상태이기에 우선 그 위에 플라스틱 커버를 씌우고 친교실을 사용하기로 했습니다. 2주간 친교실을 사용하실 때 플라스틱 커버가 찢어져서 그 밑의 새 타일에 흠이 가거나 더러워지지 않도록 주의해 주시면 감사하겠습니다.
이번에 친교실 공사와 함께 사무실도 새 단장을 했습니다. 교회 사무실이 좁아서 스태프들이 각자 일하거나 함께 앉아서 모임을 할 수 있는 공간이 없었는데 이번에 사무실 안에 있던 작은 사무실 공간을 터서 전체 사무실 공간을 넓히게 되었습니다. 새 공간애서 새로운 마음으로 사순절을 시작할 수 있음이 감사하며, 특별히 이 일을 위해서 무명으로 헌금해 주신 교우님이 계셔서 이 공사를 할 수 있었음에 깊은 감사를 드립니다.
새롭게 시작하는 사순절! 하나님의 크신 은혜와 은총이 여러분의 삶과 우리 교회위에 가득하기를 마음 모아 기원드립니다. 아멘!

This coming Tuesday is Lunar New Year’s Day. And the following day, the 18th, is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. I cannot help but think that it is a special grace that the beginning of the new year and the first day of Lent overlap this year. I am thankful that we can begin Lent with the same resolve and fresh commitment with which we begin a new year.
Our Ash Wednesday service will be held at the church at 7:00 p.m. on the 18th. We will have the imposition of ashes during the service. The same rite will also be observed during the Wednesday early morning service. Beginning on Ash Wednesday morning, we will read The Pilgrim’s Progress together. I would like to thank in advance those who will lead in prayer and reading during the 40 days of early morning prayer. If you would like a copy of the book, please receive one through Pastor Daniel. The cost is $10 for English version.
Starting today, we will distribute a “4,000 Lenten Offering Campaign Card” along with the Sunday bulletin each week. As we reflect on today’s message, we are reminded that in our life of faith, both emptying and filling are important. During this Lenten season, I hope we will practice not only fasting—emptying our lives of things that are less necessary—but also filling our lives with good works that are helpful and pleasing to God. As indicated on the card, please choose one practical action in each of the four areas: “Fasting in Life,” “Heart and Thoughts,” “Words and Actions,” and “The Body as God’s Temple.” By practicing these for one week at a time, may we gradually refine and renew our lives and faith. Please mark your completed practices on the card and submit it to the office next Sunday, and then receive a new card with the bulletin.
Beginning next Sunday, KM will have a six-week Lenten Sunday Bible study. During this season, we will study “The Parables of Jesus” together on Sunday afternoons. The class will begin at 1:00 p.m. after fellowship. I pray this will also be a time of grace for us during Lent, and I especially hope that those who have not regularly participated in Bible study will consider joining us.
The fellowship hall renovation, which we expected to proceed without issue, has unfortunately been delayed again. The work in the kitchen, storage room, and stair landing area has been completed, but the tile supplier miscalculated the number of tiles needed for the fellowship hall, resulting in a shortage. Once this was discovered, we placed an additional order, but it will take about two weeks for the tiles to arrive. The tiles that have already been installed in about half of the fellowship hall have not yet been sealed, so we will cover them with plastic and use the space in the meantime. During these two weeks, please be careful not to tear the plastic covering so that the new tiles underneath are not damaged or stained.
Along with the fellowship hall renovation, we have also changed the church office a bit. The office had been quite cramped, without sufficient space for staff members to work together. We have now removed a small enclosed office within the main office area, creating one larger, open workspace. I am grateful that we can begin Lent in this new space with a renewed spirit. I am especially thankful for the anonymous member whose generous donation made this project possible.
As we begin this new Lenten season, I sincerely pray that God’s abundant grace and favor may fill our lives and our church in many different NEW ways! Amen!
