영성훈련에 관해서 이야기할 때 입문서로써 가장 많이 언급되는 책 중에 하나는 리차드 포스터의 “Celebration of Discipline” 입니다. 저도 20대에 이 책을 읽고는 참 많은 도움을 받았습니다. 무엇보다도 우리가 힘들게 생각할 수 있는 “영적훈련”이 사실은 우리를 자유롭게 하는 귀한 도구/과정이요, 그렇기에 “영적훈련”은 두려워할 것이 아니라 celebrate 즉 감사하고 축하할 일이라는 내용이 영적훈련을 바라보는 제 시각을 건강하게 바꾸어 준 참 고마운 책이었습니다.

그런데 나중에 이 책으로 성경공부를 하려고 한어판을 찾으니 책 이름이 “영적 훈련과 성장”이라고 번역되어 중요한 “Celebration” 부분이 누락이 되어 있더군요. 그 때 깨달은 것이, 첫째로 celebration 이라는 단어가 한국어로 번역되기가 힘든 단어라는 것, 그리고 둘째로 한국사람들은 celebrate 하는데 서툴다는 것이었습니다.

그래서 사실 새사람으로 태어나는 세례식은 Happy Birthday와 같이 기뻐하고 축하해야 하는데 옛사람의 죽음을 애도하는 장례식 같은 분위기로 진행될 때가 많은 것을 보게 됩니다. 주일예배도 주님의 부활하심을 축하하는 celebration 이 되어야 하는데 구약의 제사같이 엄숙함만 압도하는 경우도 많이 보고요.

주일은 예수님의 부활하심을, 그리고 그로 인해 저희에게 주어진 생명의 은혜를 감사하고 기뻐하며, 축하하는 날입니다. 그렇기에 사순절 기간에도 주일에는 금식을 하지 않고 “작은 부활절” 이라고 부르며 감사와 기쁨으로 예배를 드리는 것입니다. 그런 의미에서 이번 사순절 기간동안 주일에 축하할 일이 많아서 참 감사합니다. 지난 주일에는 친교실/부엌 공사를 끝냄을 감사하며 축하했고, 이번 주일은 교회 사무실 오픈하우스로 함께 축하하는 시간을 갖게 됩니다. 그리고 다음 주일은 Lonnie Mead 집사님과 이정희 권사님의 결혼식이 오후에 있는 경사가 있네요.

사무실 오픈하우스는 사무실 공간을 조금 넓히고 여러분을 초대해서 함께 축하하는 시간으로 마련했습니다. 그동안 사무실이 좁은 공간으로 나눠져 있던 것을 터서 조금 더 열려 있는 공간으로 만들었습니다. 그래서 자축하는 의미와 함께 교인 여러분 중에 교회 사무실이 어디 있는지 모르시는 분들도 있다고 해서 이런 저런 이유로 조촐하게 오픈하우스 행사를 갖기로 했습니다. 주일 오후 12시 30분부터 1시 사이에 자유롭게 사무실에 오셔서 축복하는 글도 남겨 주시고, 다과와 함께 준비한 작은 선물도 받아 가시면 감사하겠습니다. 사무실에 오신 김에 제 사무실에도 들르셔서 제가 취임할 때 한나 여선교회에 마련해 주신 좋은 소파에 앉아 커피도 한잔 드시고 목회자들을 위한 축복기도도 잠깐 해 주시면 더욱 감사하겠고요. 교회 사무실은 본당 앞쪽 왼쪽에 있는 문으로 나가면 있습니다.

지난 주일 친교실과 부엌 공사가 마무리됨을 감사하면서 케이크를 주문했는데 속으로 혹시 (당이 있으신 분도 많고, 사순절 기간 동안 단것을 금하고 계신 분들도 있어서) 케이크가 많이 남으면 어떻게 하나 걱정을 했었는데, 한 조각도 남지 않고 다 드시고 가셔서 참 기뻤습니다. 주중에는 열심히 영적훈련을 쌓아 가시면서 주일에는 또한 허락해 주신 기쁨의 자리에서 맘껏 감사하고 기뻐할 수 있기를 바랍니다. Let’s Celebrate!

One of the books most frequently mentioned as an introductory text when discussing spiritual formation is Celebration of Discipline by Richard J. Foster. I read this book in my twenties and it helped me tremendously in my spiritual journey. What it taught me was that spiritual disciplines are not something to be dreaded but something to celebrate, because it enables freedom in our lives. This insight helped reshape my understanding of spiritual formation in a very healthy way, and for that I remain grateful for this book.

Later, when I tried to find the Korean edition, I discovered that the book’s title had been translated as Spiritual Discipline and Growth, leaving out the important word “Celebration.” At that time I realized two things. First, the word celebration is not an easy word to translate into Korean. Second, Korean people are not good at celebrating. For example, baptism—being born again as a new person—should be celebrated joyfully, much like a Happy Birthday. Yet many times it is conducted with an atmosphere that feels more like a funeral mourning the death of the old self. Likewise, Sunday worship should be a celebration of the Lord’s resurrection, but at times it can become overwhelmed with solemnity, like an Old Testament sacrifice.

Sunday is the day we give thanks for, rejoice in, and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the new life given to us through Him. For this reason, even during Lent we do not fast on Sundays. Instead, Sundays are called a “little Easter,” and we worship with gratitude and joy. In that sense, I am thankful that during this Lenten season we have many reasons to celebrate on Sundays. Last Sunday we celebrated the completion of the fellowship hall and kitchen renovation. This Sunday we will celebrate an open house for the church office. And next Sunday we will have another joyful occasion with the wedding of Lonnie Mead and Junghee Lee in the afternoon.

The office open house has been prepared as a time to celebrate and introduce the newly expanded office. Previously, the office was divided into smaller, narrow sections, but we have opened it up to create a more welcoming and spacious environment. (We are very grateful to an anonymous donor who made this possible!) In addition, we realized that some church members did not know where the church office was located! So, for these reasons we decided to host a small open-house reception.

You are warmly invited to stop by the office freely between 12:30 and 1:00 PM on Sunday. Please come, leave a short message of blessing, enjoy some light refreshments, and also take a small gift that we have prepared. While you are there, please also stop by my office. You are welcome to sit on the beautiful sofa that the Hannah Women’s Missionary Society purchased when I began my ministry here, enjoy a cup of coffee, and perhaps offer a short prayer of blessing for your pastors. The church office can be found through the door on the left side at the front of the sanctuary.

Last Sunday, we ordered a cake to celebrate the completion of the fellowship hall and kitchen renovation. To be honest, I was a little worried—since many people are watching their sugar intake, and others are giving up sweets during Lent—that we might end up with a lot of left-over cake. But to my great joy, not a single piece was left!

During the week, as we faithfully continue building our spiritual disciplines, I hope that on Sundays we will also fully enjoy the joy that God allows us to share together—giving thanks and rejoicing with all our hearts. So, let’s celebrate!
