제가 40대 초반에 일리노이 주의 시골 교회를 3년간 담임했던 적이 있었습니다. 일리노이 와 위스콘신, 그리고 아이오와등 3개의 주가 만나는 곳에 있는 인구 1,600명의 작은 마을에 있는 교회였습니다. 그 마을 주변 동서남북으로는 온통 옥수수를 심어 놓은 밭이 끝이 없이 펼쳐져 있었는데, 그 곳에서의 6월 풍경이 아직도 잊혀지지 않습니다.

6월이 되면 밭에 심어 놓은 옥수수가 무릎 높이만큼 자라기 시작합니다. 우리 인간도 앳될 때에 가장 “싱싱”하듯 옥수수도 그 때 가장 싱싱한 푸르름을 뿜어내는데, 멀리 보이는 지평선까지 가득 차 있는 옥수수 줄기의 푸르름은 압도적인 생명력을 뿜어내며 보는 이들의 마음을 벅차게 합니다.

6월은 그렇게 온 세상이 생명력으로 가득차는 때입니다. 사택 앞에 장미 덩굴에도 셀 수 없을 정도의 많은 빨간 장미꽃이 피었고, 반갑지 않지만 잡초들도 “힘차게” 한자리 차지하고 있네요. 자주 가는 돌산의 산길에도 이곳 저곳 나무들이 푸르름을 입으면서 늘 가던 등산로도 때론 “이 길이 맞나?” 라는 생각이 들 정도로 다른 모습으로 변하기도 합니다.

교회력을 보니 이번 주일은 오순절 셋째 주일입니다. 초대 교회에 성령이 임하고, 사도행전에 나오듯 교인들이 기하급수적으로 불어나는 가운데 성령의 충만함으로 온 교회가 함께 뜨겁게 사랑하고 기도하면서 교회가 “시퍼런” 은혜와 능력으로 가득 찼던 때였습니다.

물론 세상이, 삶이, 그렇게 푸르름으로 늘 가득차는 것은 아니죠. 한껏 푸르렀던 이파리가 떨어지는 가을도 있고, 세상이 찬바람으로 가득차는 겨울도 있습니다. 초대교회도 늘 부흥만 했던 것이 아니라, 온 교회가 사방으로 흩어져야 했던 핍박과 고난의 시간도 분명 있었습니다. 삶도 마찬가지입니다. 한껏 푸르렀던 젊은 때가 있었다면, 푸르름이 버거워지는 노년의 때도 찾아오기 마련입니다. 그래서 전도서에서 이렇게 말씀했죠. “범사에 기한이 있고 천하 만사가 다 때가 있나니, 날 때가 있고 죽을 때가 있으며 심을 때가 있고 심은 것을 뽑을 때가 있으며 ...” (전도서 3:1~2) 하지만 ...

그렇기에 하나님께서 주신 모든 때는 아름답고 (3:11) 그렇기에 때론 우리에게 주어진 시간이 잘 이해가 되지 않더라도 감사하고 기뻐하며 (3:12) 하나님의 선하심을 “때마다” 누리라고 (3:13) 전도서 기자는 또한 권면합니다.

6월입니다! 늦은 눈에 텃밭에 심었던 상추가 얼지는 않을까 걱정되던 5월도 지나고, 파이크스피크 꼭대기의 눈들이 녹아 아칸소 강을 채우며, 그 힘찬 물결에 울긋불긋한 래프트들의 환호가 물결과 함께 넘쳐나는, 하이커와 캠퍼들의 힘찬 발걸음이 산등성 마다 들려오는 ... 6월입니다.

어린 자녀들의 힘찬 여름성경학교로 이 6월을 활짝 열었는데, 계속해서 야외예배로, 44주년 감사예배로, 선교 바자회로, 호피 단기선교로, 중고등부 여름 수양회로 ... 알찬 푸르름이 가득한 이 여름이 되기를 바랍니다. 온 세상이, 그래서 마음도, 한껏 푸르른 6월입니다!

There was a time, in my early forties, when I pastored a small country church in rural Illinois for three years. The church stood in a town of about 1,600 people near the point where Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa meet. In every direction—north, south, east, and west—endless fields of corn stretched to the horizon. Even now, I cannot forget the beauty of June in that place.

By June, the corn would have grown to about knee high. Just as people seem most vibrant in their youth, so the corn at that stage radiated its full vitality. The sea of green stalks, reaching all the way to the distant horizon, overflow with life itself. It was a sight so powerful that it filled the heart with wonder.

June is a season when the whole world comes alive with energy. The climbing roses in front of the parsonage are bursting with countless red blooms, and even the unwelcome weeds have claimed their place with remarkable force. Along the trails of the rocky hills where I often hike, trees have clothed themselves in fresh green leaves, transforming familiar paths so completely that I sometimes find myself lost in a new world.

Looking at the church calendar, I see that this Sunday is the Third Sunday after Pentecost. It reminds us of those days when the Holy Spirit descended upon the early church, and as we read in the Book of Acts, believers multiplied rapidly, and the church overflowed with love, prayer, grace, and power. It was a season when the people of God were filled with the vivid, living presence of the Spirit.

Of course, neither the world nor our lives remain forever green. There are autumns when the leaves that once flourished begin to fall. There are winters when only cold winds fills the landscape. The early church, too, did not experience growth and revival only. There were seasons of persecution and suffering when believers were scattered in every direction. So it is with us. If there was a season of young and vigorous vitality, there will also come seasons when that very vigor feels burdensome. So, the Teacher in Ecclesiastes reminds us: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot...” (Ecclesiastes 3:1–2)

And yet … because every season comes from God, each one is beautiful in its own way (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Therefore, even when we do not fully understand the times we are given, we are called to rejoice and give thanks (Ecclesiastes 3:12), and to enjoy the goodness of God in every season of life (Ecclesiastes 3:13).

It is June! May is behind us—the month when we worried that a late snowfall might freeze the lettuce seedlings in our gardens. The snow atop Pikes Peak is melting now, filling the Arkansas River with rushing water. Colorful rafts dance upon the rapids, carrying laughter and cheers downstream. Across the mountain ridges, the steady footsteps of hikers and campers echo through the summer air.

It is June! We have opened this month with the joyful energy of Vacation Bible School, and ahead of us lie an outdoor worship service, our 44th Anniversary Service, the Mission Bazaar, the Hopi Short-Term Mission Trip, and the Youth Summer Retreat.

My prayer is that this season will be filled with rich and fruitful greenery—a summer overflowing with life, faith, and joy. The world around us is green, and may our hearts be full of green as well—full of life, hope, and the goodness of God. It is June … with all its green splendor!
