지난 12월은 콜로라도 역사상 가장 따듯했던 12월이라고 합니다. 12월 평균 최고기온이 약 55.4°F (약 13°C)로 평균보다 약 10.8°F (약 6°C) 이상 높았다고 하니 정말로 따듯한 한달이었습니다. 지난 15일에는 65°F까지 올라가 1946년 이후 일일 최고기온 기록을 세웠다고 합니다. 따듯한 온도와 함께 눈도 거의 오지 않아서 가장 dry 한 12월이었다고 합니다. 때아닌 봄을 만난 듯 12월에 골프장이 북적대는 모습을 보게 될 줄 누가 알았겠습니까!
그렇게 12월인데도 눈이 듬성듬성 조금 밖에 쌓여 있지 않은 파이크스피크를 보면서 살짝 걱정하는 마음도 들었는데, 지난 목요일 드디어 눈이 왔습니다! 1인치쯤 살짝 눈이 올 것이라는 예보가 있었는데, 금요일 아침에 일어나 보니 1 피트가 넘는 눈이 내려져 있더군요.
새벽에 부리나케 교회로 와보니 이미 정문 앞 경사로의 눈이 깨끗이 치워져 있었습니다. 이번에 새로 교회에 오신 성도님께서 부지런히 치워 놓아주신 것입니다. 이 지면을 빌어 감사를 드립니다. 눈이 오면 연세 있으신 분들이나 멀리 사시는 분들이 새벽기도등 교회 모임에 나오시지 못하는 어려움이 있습니다. 그런 가운데서도 자신의 자리를 용감하게 지켜 주시는 분들이 계셔 감사할 뿐입니다. 지난 금요일에도 예배부장님께서 어김없이 일찍 나와 교회문을 열어 놓으셨고, 중보기도팀 모임이 있는 날이었는데 눈으로 인해 팀원들이 다 나오지 못한 상황에서도 팀장님께서 혼자 힘차게 기도의 자리를 지켜 주시는 것을 보면서 다시 한번 감사와 경의를 표하게 됩니다.
눈이 오면 불편한 점이 많습니다. 운전도 어렵고 눈을 치우는 일도 만만치 않습니다. 전에 있던 교회에서 새로 오신 권사님 한 분이 눈 치우는 삽을 12개나 사다 주시면서 “목사님, 절대로 혼자서 눈 치우지 마세요!” 신신 당부하시길래, 그 이유를 여쭤보니 남편 되시는 분이 젊어서 눈을 치우다가 심장마비로 돌아가셨다는 것입니다. 눈이 많이 오는 시카고 지역 같은 곳에서는 가끔 듣게 되는 일인데, 그만큼 눈 치우는 일이 쉽지 않다는 것이죠.
하지만 겨울에는 눈이 와야 합니다. 시골에서 목회할 때 금년처럼 따듯한 겨울을 보낸 적이 있었습니다. 그 때 (무식하게) “금년 겨울은 눈이 안 와서 너무 좋아요!” 했더니 농사 짓는 교인 한 분이 “목사님, 겨울에 눈이 와야 봄이 되면 땅이 촉촉해져 씨를 뿌리기가 좋습니다” 하시는 겁니다. 콜로라도도 겨울에 산에 쌓이는 눈이 이 지역의 강과 시내를 채워주는 수원이 됩니다. 그와 같이 때에 맞춰 일어나야 하는 일들이 일어나 줘야 세상이 조화롭게 돌아가겠죠? 콜로라도 1월 평균 적설량이 5인치라고 하는데 지난 주 내린 눈으로 12월에 모자랐던 눈까지 다 채워준 것 같아 조금은 안심이 되네요.
지난 주일 속대항 윷놀이는 여느 때와 같이 뜨거운 열기 속에 잘 마쳤습니다. 수고해 주신 남선교회회장님과 여러분께 감사를 드립니다. 놀 때는 화끈하게 놀아주는 한미교회의 모습이 참 좋습니다. 다음주일에 첫 임원회로 모이고 그 다음주일에 교육부 비전모임이 있을 예정입니다. 이어서 45주년 준비팀도 결성되어 모이게 됩니다. 놀 때는 신나게, 기도할 때는 뜨겁게, 그리고 일할 때에는 힘차게 일하는 “젊은 기운이 가득한” 한미교회의 새해가 되기를 기도하며 축복합니다!

It is said that this past December was the warmest December in Colorado’s history. The average high temperature for the month was about 55.4°F (around 13°C), which is approximately 10.8°F (about 6°C) higher than normal—truly a warm month indeed. On the 15th, the temperature even climbed to 65°F, setting a daily record high for the first time since 1946. Along with the warmth, there was hardly any snow, making it the driest December on record as well. Who could have imagined seeing golf courses bustling with activity in December, as if we had stumbled into an early spring?
As I looked at Pikes Peak with only sparse patches of snow despite it being December, I felt a slight sense of concern. Then, this past Thursday, the snow finally came! The forecast had called for about an inch, but when I woke up on Friday morning, more than a foot of snow had fallen.
I hurried to the church early in the morning and found that the snow on the front entrance ramp had already been completely cleared. A member who recently joined our church had diligently taken care of it. I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks. When it snows, it becomes difficult for our senior members or those who live far away to attend early morning prayer meetings and other church gatherings. Even so, I am deeply grateful for those who faithfully and courageously hold their place. This past Friday as well, our Worship Committee Chair came early as always to open the church doors. It was also a day for the Intercessory Prayer Team meeting, and although not all members were able to come because of the snow, the team leader remained alone, steadfastly keeping the place of prayer. Seeing this once again filled my heart with gratitude and respect.
Snow certainly brings many inconveniences. Driving becomes difficult, and shoveling snow is no easy task. At a previous church, a newly joined exhorter once bought twelve snow shovels for the church and told me, “Pastor, never shovel snow by yourself!” When I asked why, she shared that her husband had passed away from a heart attack while shoveling snow when he was young. In places like Chicago, where heavy snowfall is common, such stories are not rare — reminding us just how physically demanding snow shoveling can be.
Still, winter needs snow. When I was pastoring in a rural area, there was a year when we experienced a winter as warm as this one. And when (rather ignorantly) I remarked, “It’s so nice that there’s no snow this winter,” a farmer in the congregation said to me, “Pastor, there needs to be snow in winter, so that the ground can be moist in the spring, making it good for sowing seeds.” Here in Colorado, the snow that accumulates in the mountains during winter becomes the source of water that fills our rivers and streams. In short, when things happen in their proper season, the world remains in balance.
Last Sunday’s inter-cell Yut Nori event was, as always, wrapped up successfully in an atmosphere full of excitement. I extend my thanks to the Men’s Mission Chair and all who worked hard to make it happen. I truly love the way Hanmi Church knows how to enjoy wholeheartedly when it’s time to play. Next Sunday, we will gather for our first Church Council meeting of the year, followed by the Education Department Vision Meeting the next Sunday. Soon after, the TF team preparing for our 45th anniversary will also be formed and begin meeting.
As we begin this new year, I pray and bless Hanmi Church to be a community “filled with youthful energy”—playing joyfully when it’s time to play, praying fervently when it’s time to pray, and working vigorously when it’s time to work. May God’s abundant grace be with us all!
