지난 주일인 21일은 동지였습니다. 동지는 일년 중 밤이 가장 긴 날로 그날 밤은 장장 14시간 30분, 즉 낮은 9시간 30분밖에 되지 않았다고 합니다. 동지까지가 점점 깊은 밤을 향한 시간이었다면 이제부터는 점점 밝은 빛으로 나아가는 시간이 되겠습니다. 성탄절이 그런 동지와 엇비슷한 때에 있다는 것은 참 의미로운 일입니다. 사랑의 빛으로 오셔서 죄와 죽음의 어둠을 향해 치닫고 있는 세상을 점점 환하게 비춰 주시는 예수님의 생명의 역사를 전적으로 보여 준다고 할 수 있겠습니다.
지난 성탄절 음악제는 그러한 빛의 역사를 찬양 가운데 경험케 한 참으로 은혜로운 행사였습니다. 온 교우가 힘을 모아 예수 그리스도의 탄생을 찬양함으로 우리 가운데 하나님의 사랑이 넘쳐남을 모두가 만끽한 은혜의 시간이었습니다.
SEED Ministry 어린이들의 깜찍한 옷차림의 악기연주와 벨 찬양은 성탄절의 기쁨을 배로 더해 주었습니다. 어린이들이 귀한 찬양을 드릴 수 있도록 이끄느라 수고해 주신 학부모님들과, 특별히 왕희진 선생님께 감사를 드립니다. 왕희진 성도님은 어린이들 지도뿐 아니라 성가대 반주, 그리고 중고등부 챔버 음악 지휘까지 맡아 주셔서 이번 찬양제에 큰 공헌을 해 주셨습니다. 아울러 아이들과 함께 깜짝 출연해 주신 김연미 PTA 회장님을 비롯해 자녀들을 집에서 연습시키고, 라이드 주고, 연습 시간동안 기다려 주는등 수고를 아끼지 않은 학부모님들께 또한 감사를 드립니다!
이어져 있었던 Imago Dei 중고등부의 다이내믹한 워십댄스는 예배당 전체를 기쁨의 열기로 가득 채우기에 조금도 부족하지 않았습니다. 그날 찬양제에 초대되어 온 가정이 여럿 있었는데 그 가정의 자녀들이 워십댄스를 부러워하면서 자기들도 저런 것을 해 보았으면 좋겠다 하는 이야기를 엿들으면서 저희 중고등부가 한없이 자랑스럽기도 했습니다. 더구나 “You Raise Me Up” 이란 곡을 아름답게 연주한 Imago Dei 챔버 악단을 보면서, ‘어느새 우리 중고등부가 저렇게 성장했나 하는 뿌듯함과 감사로 마음이 가득했던 시간이었습니다.
늘 마음에 잔잔한 은혜를 듬뿍 안겨주는 글로리 합창단의 찬양과 메마른 곳 없이 영혼 구석 구석까지 은혜의 단비로 촉촉히 적셔주는 한미 성가대의 찬양을 들으면서 사무실에서 엿들었던 수많은 연습 시간을 떠올렸습니다. 정성에 정성을 더하고 모아서 드린 찬양이 듣는 이들의 마음뿐 아니라 하나님의 마음 또한 기쁘게 해 드렸으리라 믿어 의심치 않습니다. 내년에는 순회 공연을 한번 해 볼까 하는 생각마저 들게 한 아름다운 찬양에 감사드리며, 수고하신 모든 대원들, 그리고 아픈 몸에도 나와 반주해 주신 안혜준 집사님과, 합창단과 성가대 양쪽을 다 지휘하느라 두배로 수고하신 이선영 지휘자님께 깊은 감사를 드립니다.
지난 찬양제때 외부 손님들이 꽤 오셨었습니다. 지역 교회 목사님 가정이 두 가정 오셨고, 출장으로 콜로라도에 와 계시던 성도님, 지역 성경공부를 통해 우리 교회 교우들과 알고 지내는 젊은 가정들 등등 ... 성탄의 기쁨을 또한 이렇게 이웃들과 나눌 수 있었음이 감사했던 성탄절 찬양제! 이제 조금씩 길어지는 아침과 함께, 귀한 찬양으로 인해 다가오는 새해에는 조금 더 힘차게, 조금 더 희망차게 나아갈 수 있을 것 같다는 마음에, 다시한번 수고하신 여러분께 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 감사합니다!

Last Sunday, the 21st, marked the winter solstice—the day with the longest night of the year. On that night, darkness lasted as long as 14 hours and 30 minutes, leaving only 9 hours and 30 minutes of daylight. If the days leading up to the solstice carried us ever deeper into the night, from this point on we begin moving steadily toward increasing light. How meaningful it is that Christmas falls so close to the winter solstice! It beautifully proclaims the life-giving work of Jesus Christ, who came as the light of love to illuminate a world rushing toward the darkness of sin and death.
Our recent Christmas Concert was truly a grace-filled event in which we experienced that story of light through praise. As the entire congregation joined together to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, it was a blessed time in which we all delighted in the overflowing love of God among us.
The children of the SEED Ministry doubled the joy of Christmas with their delightful instrumental performances and bell choir, dressed so adorably. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the parents who worked so hard to guide the children in offering such precious praise, and especially to Ms. Heejin Whang. She made an extraordinary contribution to this concert—not only by guiding the children, but also by accompanying the choir and directing the Youth Chamber Ensemble. I am also grateful to PTA President Yunmi Shin, who made a surprise appearance with the children, and to all the parents who faithfully helped their children practice at home, provided rides, and waited patiently through rehearsals without sparing their time or effort.
The dynamic worship dance by the Imago Dei Youth Group was more than enough to fill the entire sanctuary with joyful energy. Several visiting families attended the concert, and I overheard their children admiring the worship dance and wishing they could do something like that themselves. In that moment, I felt immense pride in our youth ministry. And as I watched the Imago Dei Chamber Ensemble beautifully perform “You Raise Me Up,” my heart was filled with gratitude and a deep sense of fulfillment, realizing just how much our youth group has grown.
As I listened to the gentle, grace-filled praise of the Glory Choir, which always brings quiet blessings to the heart, and the Hanmi Choir, whose singing refreshes every corner of the soul like life-giving rain, I found myself recalling the countless hours of practice I had glimpsed from the office. Praise offered with such devotion and care surely delighted not only those who listened, but also the heart of God. The beauty of the music even made me think, “Perhaps we should consider a concert tour next year.” With deep gratitude, I thank all the choir members, pianist Hyejun Kim who came to accompany despite being unwell, and Director Sonyong Bishop, who worked twice as hard by directing both the Hanmi and the Glory Choir.
We were also blessed to have many visitors at the concert—two local pastors’ families, a visitor on a business trip, and several families with young children. What a joy it was to share the gladness of Christmas with our neighbors in this way! As the mornings now begin to grow longer, and as the echoes of this beautiful praise remain with us, I feel confident that we will be able to step into the coming year with greater strength and deepened hope. Once again, I offer my deepest thanks to all who served so faithfully. Thank you!
